Nursing Approved Super Food Bowl

It’s been so fun to dig through the Household archives and find posts like this one from my early days of motherhood with Owen. Since fingers crossed June has made her arrival at this point and we’re working on the mechanics of breastfeeding, I thought sharing some of my old breastfeeding friendly recipes would not only be helpful for me, but maybe some of you who are right there too.

I started researching foods that support lactation towards the end of my pregnancy. Not only is this bowl packed with nutrients that increase lactation, but as long as you aren’t making this for your entire family for dinner, it is something you can store and eat over the course of a few days while you’re busy at home breastfeeding. Key ingredients in this dish that support healthy lactation: ginger, carrots, sesame seeds, garlic, flaxseed & quinoa.


+ 1/2 cup quinoa

+ 1 cup black eyed peas rinsed and drained

+ 2 carrots peeled & cut in to tiny cubes

+ 1/2 head broccoli chopped

+ 1/2 cup pois peas rinsed and drained

+ 1/3 cup of toasted seeds (i used sesame & flax)

+ 2 cloves of garlic

+ Handful of mint – torn

+ 2 green onions, chopped

+ ginger dressing


+ Cook your quinoa.

+ Peel & chop your carrots, chop your broccoli in to bite size pieces, & thinly slice your green onions.

+ In a medium size sauce pan add a dash of water and steam your broccoli and carrots over medium heat. This should only take a few minutes. Strain any remaining water and set your veggies aside, covered.

+ Rinse and drain your peas. In a small sauce pan over medium heat warm your peas.

+ Press your two cloves of garlic and add in to your peas as they warm up.

+ Combine your quinoa, veggies & peas. Mix.

+ Add in your toasted nuts, torn mint & green onions. Mix.

+ Add salt and pepper to taste & dressing when served.

+ To make this easy I purchased this ginger dressing, but you can absolutely make your own as well.
